A Water Boiler: Providing Hot Water and Heat Efficiently and Effectively

by | Oct 16, 2018 | HVAC Contractor

Many older homes do not operate their heating system using a furnace. Nor do they have a standard hot water heater. Instead, they have a water boiler. This functions to provide both services to their homes effectively and efficiently. While older models may suffer from certain issues, the modern versions are an improvement, resulting in even greater benefits for homeowners.

The Purpose of Boilers

At its most basic, water boilers heat water. They then send it through a system of pipes throughout the residence or office. The pipes terminate in various radiators or under the floor. Boilers do not waste heat, losing it in ductwork. They radiate it out.
As with furnaces, a water boiler has several parts. Some they have in commonality with traditional furnaces; others are related directly to the need to address water flow. Components include:

  • Thermostat
  • Pressure gauge
  • Valves for water feed
  • Valves for pressure reduction
  • Valves for controlling water flow
  • Drainage valves
  • Circular pump
  • Expansion tank

For a water boiler to function to its optimal potential, maintenance is essential.

Why Install a Water Boiler?

For those considering the installation of a boiler system, consider the following benefits

  • Efficient – In spite of the myth, boilers do not waste water. They recycle it efficiently and effectively. As a closed system, they use the same water repeatedly making sure your water and hydro bill are not excessive
  • Environmentally Responsible – Except for the water you use in showering or bathing, a boiler recycles all the water sent out to heat a room. This makes it more environmentally responsive and responsible than many other forms of home and business heating
  • Savings –The latest versions of boilers are highly energy efficient.
  • Low Maintenance – While they require maintenance, the demands for such are less than for traditional models
  • Longevity – Boilers last for at least 30 years before replacement is under consideration
These are some of the reasons for the popularity of water boiler systems.
